The Longest “Happy Hour” in History… Sort Of
When you think of a marathon happy hour, you probably picture a bar counter yawning hours beyond closing time with endless margaritas and half-price wings. So who holds the record for the longest stretch of liquid cheer? It’s not quite what you’d expect.
Meet Ruth Brands — Marathon Bartender Extraordinaire
The real record isn’t for sipping nonstop, but for serving nonstop. Back in 2012, Ruth Brands held the title for the longest marathon bartending shift, pouring drinks for a staggering 111 hours straight—that’s nearly five days behind the bar! Her feat took place at Café Het Gildenhuis in Opglabbeek, Belgium, ending on November 4, 2012 Guinness World Records.
While not your traditional happy hour, you’ve got to admit—111 hours of service with probably at least a few happy hours thrown in sounds like the ultimate bartender endurance test. Imagine the drink specials she must’ve dished out!
A Quirky Caveat: What Exactly Is “Happy Hour”?
Strictly speaking, “happy hour” refers to a time when restaurants or bars offer drink discounts to lure in early or lull-time crowds. Typically it’s shape-shifting: an hour or two pre-dinner or late afternoon—but definitely not 111 hours. Still, for the sake of storytelling, let’s call it the most sustained party-ing (from the bartender’s perspective).
So, no, there’s no Guinness title that literally says “Longest Happy Hour.” But when a bartender can go 111 hours straight, serving pints, pours, and smiles, it’s safe to say she held the longest “happy hour” in spirit. Cheers to Ruth Brands’s legendary shift!
