May’s Signature Spirits: Tequila, Mezcal, & Refreshing Drinks for Warmer Weather
As temperatures rise during this time of year, May is the perfect month to spotlight two of Mexico (and the world’s) most iconic spirits: tequila and mezcal. Whether you’re a bartender looking to perfect your seasonal menu or just a cocktail enthusiast ready to try some new things at home, these spirits bring bold character and refreshing variety to spring and summer drinks!
Some History: Tequila & Mezcal
Something these spirits have in common is that they are both made from the agave plant. However, their histories, production methods, and flavor profiles are unique.
Tequila:
- Region: Mainly Jalisco, where the town of Tequila resides!
- Fun fact: For a spirit to be considered “Tequila” it must come from one of the five authorized states in Mexico: Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, or Tamaulipas.
- Agave type: Agave tequilana (commonly called Blue Weber Agave)
- Distillation: Heated in large industrial ovens, then distilled in copper or stainless steel stills
- Flavor: Clean, crisp, citrusy, and peppery
Mezcal:
- Region: Nine different regions in Mexico produce mezcal, however, Oaxaca produces 85% of the world’s mezcal.
- Agave type: Many varieties including espadín (most popular), tobalá, and tobasiche
- Distillation: Agave hearts are roasted underground in pits, which gives it it’s signature smoky flavor
- Flavor: Earthy, smoky, and wild. Flavors can depend on the type of agave used and the distillation process
Tequila and Mezcal Springtime Cocktails
Whether you want to lean into the bright citrus, fresh herbs, or want something cold and crisp, both tequila and mezcal are fantastic foundations for warm-weather drinks. Here are some suggestions:
Classic Paloma
Tequila blanco, fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lime juice, soda water, and a
pinch of salt makes a great springtime drink combination. For a smoky twist, swap half of the tequila blanco for mezcal.
Cucumber Jalapeño Cooler
This refreshing drink can be made with either tequila or mezcal. Combine either with fresh cucumber juice, fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and thinly sliced jalapeño. We recommend shaking and serving over ice!
Mezcal Mojito
Mezcal, fresh mint, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and soda water gives a bold new edge to a classic summer staple. Muddle the mint gently to keep it fresh!
Watermelon Basil Margarita
Tequila blanco, watermelon puree, fresh lime juice, and basil simple syrup shaken and strained over crushed ice makes a must-have springtime drink. Garnish with a basil leaf and maybe a small watermelon wedge!
Bonus: Build-Your-Own Agave Cocktail Bar!
If you’re hosting any gathering in the spring, whether it be a brunch, bridal shower, or something just for fun, consider setting up a build-your-own agave cocktail bar. Include the following to “wow” your guests:
- Tequila and Mezcal bases
- Juice: Fresh lime, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and watermelon
- Mixers: tonic water, soda water, and ginger beer
- Garnishes: Tajin, salt, fresh herbs, and citrus wheels
This set up invites guests to try both spirits and create their perfect sunny day drink!
Tequila and mezcal are complex, traditional spirits that shine in thoughtful, seasonal drinks. As we embrace the longer days and warmer nights, we should also embrace the depth and versatility of agave! Whether you’re creating something new like a mezcal mojito or something classic like a paloma, May is made for mezcal and tequila. Salud!
